JPG, JPEG or JFIF: get your images ready for the web

Preview before converting

See each image as soon as you select it, together with its dimensions and file size. Remove a file without clearing the entire batch.

Choose your trade-off

Higher quality retains more detail. Lower quality can reduce file size but may soften textures and edges.

Compare on your device

Conversion runs in your browser. Each result shows its file size and preview, so you can decide whether to download it.

How to convert JPG to WebP

1

Add your images

Drop JPG, JPEG or JFIF files into the area and check their previews. Up to 30 files, 20 MB per file and 150 MB per batch.

2

Set your quality

Start at 85 and adjust for your photo. This setting controls WebP compression without changing image dimensions.

3

Convert and compare

Choose Convert to WebP. Compare the original and result, check the file size, then download individual files or a ZIP archive.

JPG or WebP: which should you choose?

JPG / JPEG

A common choice for photographs and older software. A JPG is already compressed with loss and contains no transparency.

WebP

A format suited to website images. It can produce a smaller file depending on the photo and quality setting. Check that your software or publishing platform accepts WebP.

Which quality setting should you use?

70

Prioritize file size

Try this for small photographic illustrations. Inspect fine details before publishing.

85

A starting point

Test the balance between size and detail. This does not mean a guaranteed 85% visual quality.

95

Prioritize detail

Try this if 85 visibly degrades your image. The file will often be larger.

JPG to WebP questions

Can I use a .jfif file?

Yes, if it contains a valid JPEG image. JFIF is a file format using JPEG encoding. The tool checks file contents, not just the filename extension.

Why is my WebP sometimes larger?

Your JPG may already be highly compressed. Re-encoding at a high quality can increase its size. Compare the files: lower quality or keep the original when conversion offers no benefit.

Is this a lossless conversion?

No. This tool uses the browser WebP encoder’s quality setting and does not offer a lossless WebP mode. Conversion cannot restore detail already lost in the JPG.

Will the background become transparent?

No. JPG contains no transparency. Conversion keeps its visible background and does not remove it. That is why this tool has no background-color setting.

Are my photos sent to a server?

No. Selected files are read and converted locally in your browser. No account is required. Closing the tab loses any results you have not downloaded.

What happens to dimensions and metadata?

Conversion preserves the displayed width and height after the browser handles image orientation. It does not copy EXIF and GPS metadata from the original. Re-encoding can change the color profile.

Why can’t a file be converted?

It may be damaged, contain something other than JPEG data, exceed 20 MB or 40 megapixels, or require more memory than available. Reduce the batch, try another JPEG or resize your photo first.

Need a different adjustment?

Use the resizer to reduce dimensions, the compressor to target a file size in KB, or the WebP-to-JPG converter to switch back to JPG.
